2026 GMC Hummer EV Review, Specs, Features – If you want the ultimate in electric luxury, there isn’t much more ridiculous than the 2026 GMC Hummer EV. The original’s wide stance, big tires, and strong diesel engine made it scary, to put it lightly. The redesigned Hummer retains its enormous, ubiquitous presence, with one notable exception: it is electric.
The first 2026 GMC Hummer EVs are starting to be driven as you read this. The already sold-out Edition 1, which retails for $110,295 plus $1,595 for delivery, is the first to go on sale. Less costly variants, which range in price from $80,000 to $100,000, will be available later this year as well as in 2023 and 2024.
The Edition 1 boasts the most impressive characteristics. GMC estimates that a 205-kilowatt-hour battery pack can deliver enough energy for 329 miles under ideal conditions. The 800-volt architecture is compatible with the most powerful 350-kilowatt DC fast chargers, and GMC claims that the Hummer can need around 12 minutes to go 100 miles on electricity. The automaker calculates that it will take 42 minutes to charge the battery from 20% to 80% at an average charging speed of 175 kW. 2026 GMC Hummer EV Review
2026 GMC Hummer EV Redesign and Update Plan
Exterior & Interior
The 205-kWh battery powers the Edition 1’s three electric motors, two of which are located in the rear and one in the front. The system’s 1,000 horsepower and 1,200 pound-feet of torque combined are quite amazing. The 9,000-pound beast can reach 60 miles per hour in only three seconds when the Watts to Freedom launch mode is activated. In a vehicle of big, that is absurd.
How large exactly? The 2026 GMC Hummer EV is over eighteen feet in length and over eight feet in width. Because of its width, it requires three wipers to maintain a clear windshield and the federally mandated marker lights.
Although the Hummer’s rear-wheel steering makes it seem more like a midsize pickup, you would think it would be challenging to operate off-road. With the help of the back wheels, which can swivel 10 degrees in any direction, the Hummer can be maneuvered around any corner.
The turning circle is just 37.1 feet long, and I can slalom over stones that I would frequently clip with a vehicle this size. The rear-wheel steering is a game changer for off-road agility.
When the rear wheels move in unison with the front wheels, the Hummer’s Crab Walk becomes magical. One of the most bizarre things I’ve ever experienced in a car is feeling a car go simultaneously forward and sideways. It’s even stranger than flipping a monster truck.
The Hummer’s tires, which have 35 inches of rubber wrapped around 18 inches of wheel at each of the four corners, are made by Goodyear. Although GMC says you may install 37-inch tires if you want to, none were available when I took a test drive.
The Hummer’s most surprising tire fact, however, is that there isn’t a spare. For a car that is supposed to be an off-road beast, the lack of a factory spare is rather bad, but GMC designers told me it was a packaging problem. Fortunately, there is a spare tire carrier that the dealer installed in the bed; nonetheless, this shouldn’t cost more. 2026 GMC Hummer EV Review
2026 GMC Hummer EV Specs
Engine & Performance
The Hummer comes with two dirt modes: Off-Road and Terrain. There is also an Extract setting that raises the truck to its maximum suspension height in case you need to liberate it (if you can get this thing stuck in the first place). The maximum ride height of the Hummer EV is 11.9 inches, and its approach, departure, and breakover angles are 44.3, 33.7, and 25.4 degrees, respectively. With the exception of breakover, it performs better than the Rivian R1T and surpasses the Jeep Gladiator Rubicon in every specification.
Drivers can modify the regenerative braking when in off-road mode. Remember that as you let go of the throttle, an EV starts to stop efficiently. Sometimes that’s great and exactly what you want, but I’d want to get the Hummer into some sand dunes, where the timing of the throttle pull determines whether a gas-powered truck can fly through the air or drift over the dunes. Whether the Hummer crashes and gets stuck at the top of the dune or slays it like a champ depends on it.
The truck is set up such that the pedal feels the same regardless of how the vehicle is slowed down, even when the Hummer’s mechanical brakes are engaged in terrain mode. Unfortunately, utilizing the mechanical brakes in this mode wastes all that stopping force. However, Terrain mode is designed for rock crawling at low speeds, and GMC thought it could give drivers a bit more control by allowing them to just use the dependable mechanical brakes.
In contrast to the Rivian R1T, the Hummer has front and rear locking differentials, but it still uses incredible computer engineering to provide the ideal amount of torque to each wheel. Despite being virtual, the rear locker serves the same purpose as the mechanical front locker, which is to keep the wheels moving at the same pace regardless of traction. The short road on my test drive doesn’t really require lockers; the little wheel spin I saw immediately disappeared when I tested the rear in a few spots.
The Hummer’s four-wheel independent suspension system is largely responsible for the pleasant off-road experience. My head doesn’t wander around a lot, and the chairs are cozy, heated, and cooled. It’s easy to get in and out of this big car thanks to grab handles on all four corners.
2026 GMC Hummer EV Fuel Economy
The weight of the Hummer makes it inefficient. With a 205-kWh battery and an anticipated 329 miles of range, it works out to 1.6 miles per kWh. The Ford F-150 Lightning’s long-range 131-kWh battery is anticipated to deliver 2.3 miles per kWh, while the Rivian R1T’s 135-kW battery can go 2.3 miles per kWh.
Naturally, the total driving range drops on dirt. The computer said that the truck’s efficiency had decreased to 1 mile per kWh at the end of the trail drive, or a range of 205 miles, though my little off-road experience isn’t really enough to make a firm assessment. Not very good, that.
Slipstream efficiency is not anticipated with a vehicle such as this one, though. The greatest EV for making a statement is without a doubt the Hummer. If you want to do it all, or at least seem like you could, the new Hummer EV is the car for you, despite its drawbacks. 2026 GMC Hummer EV Review
2026 GMC Hummer EV Safety Features
Driving the Hummer on pavement makes it feel, well, normal. The wind noise from this car is tolerable despite its aggressive tires and brick-like shape. Of course, if you want the whole experience, you can take off the roof panels. They are lightweight and may be stored in the frunk with an extra connection.
The exceptional Super Cruise driver-assistance technology from General Motors, which is an eyes-up, hands-free system that smoothly navigates the highway and modifies the truck’s speed before turns, is standard on the Edition 1.
The Hummer is a little challenging to drive in cities due to its massive blind spots. But the most shocking feature of the Hummer is its weight. The 9,000-pound Hummer takes a lot longer to stop than you’re probably used to, even with its excellent brakes.
