I named our Kia Linka after the wind-themed Eastern European Planeteer and loaded the Kia Access smartphone software when it came. In addition to sending orders to lock and unlock the doors, open the hatch, or adjust the temperature, I can use the app to remotely check the EV6’s position and charge level. Considering how little care the EV6 requires, it’s also a useful hub for monitoring its service cycles.
I immediately encountered my main issue with the 2026 EV6. A home charging line is absent from the 2026 Kia EV6, in contrast to its HMA E-GMP siblings, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Genesis GV60.
You’re on your own when it comes to figuring out how to get electricity into the damn thing, but the EV does come with the convenient V2L converter from the manufacturer, which allows you to utilize the battery to power gadgets or appliances off the grid or in an emergency.
To make daily charging more pleasant, I would advise any potential EV owner to think about installing a permanent charging station. However, a 110-volt or 240-volt charging cable and brick may be useful for emergency charging when traveling and as a temporary charging option during the first few weeks of ownership.
Although this greatly depends on actually being close to a station, new owners may benefit from the bundled Kia Charge Pass, which gives 1,000 kW of Electrify America DC fast charging. Luckily, I live close to a large number of them. 2026 Kia EV6 Dimensions

Engine & Performance
Not surprisingly, we decided to make the EV6 our next long-term test vehicle because I would be driving it for thousands of miles over the course of the following year. Naturally, we would have to settle with less than the red-hot EV6 GT’s 576 horsepower because it had just been introduced and was not yet available when we requested our testing. However, there are still several advantages to the more conservative trim selections.
Due in part to our prior evaluation of the highest trim GT-Line model and in part to our hunch that this was the sweet spot in the lineup, we decided to go with the EV6 Wind e-AWD model for the 2026 model year. With our selection, an all-wheel drive system with two motors producing 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque is produced.
The EPA estimates that if I use Kia’s Long Range 77.4-kWh battery pack, I will have an average range of around 274 miles between charges, or 3.125 miles per kWh when battery reserve is taken into consideration.

I am unable to utilize the free Kia Charge Pass charging since I am only the EV6’s steward for the year and not its true owner. Rather, I have personally covered the cost of each kWh used. Although a bit awkward, it has helped me determine how much conventional DC quick charging costs.
In the seven months after I received my Linka in late November 2026, I have traveled more over 4,120 kilometers. Most of the remaining miles are highway miles in moderate traffic, with a few longer road excursions thrown in. About two-thirds of the remaining miles are on surface streets and B-roads surrounding town.
I have so far primarily experimented in Normal or Eco mode, with occasional forays into the Sport program, because of an extraordinarily wet winter that has kept my favorite dynamic routes blocked due to landslides until very recently. With individual excursions occasionally reaching up to 4.0 miles per kWh, I’ve averaged about 3.3 miles per kWh during its lifetime, which is somewhat better than the EPA statistics.
Since fast charging is slower and more costly for the final 20%, I hardly ever charge the EV6 above 80%. For safety, I also never let it drop below 20%. I really travel 150–160 miles between charges as a consequence. While Electrify America costs $0.48 per kWh, my 20% to 80% DC rapid charge sessions often cost $20.
I got wise and joined EA’s Pass Plus program at about 1,800 miles. My typical 20–80% session costs about $16 and almost pays for itself after only one charge because to the $4 monthly membership, which lowers the cost per kWh to $0.36.
As a pleasant bonus, I’ve occasionally been able to combine DC quick charging with slower level 2 charging. This includes free parking at several retail locations and long-term parking at the Oakland and San Francisco airports.
Kia will pay the insurance payments for the length of this long-term test, thus my total charging expenses for the year so far have come to $414.55, or around $0.10 per mile. And lastly, the issue of maintenance—or rather, the absence of it. The EV6 appears to be rather straightforward to maintain for years to come, requiring only the odd coolant and brake change every few years, in contrast to the majority of modern cars, whether ICE or EV, which normally shouldn’t require significant upkeep inside the first few hundred miles.
A tire rotation at 24,000 miles will be the EV’s first significant planned maintenance event. The vehicle’s brakes, air conditioner, 12-volt battery, and suspension parts will also be inspected. Brake fluid replacement is not scheduled until 48,000 miles or around two years, whichever comes first.
Naturally, there are regular maintenance tasks that must be completed. Up until now, my sole responsibilities have been to monitor tire pressure during temperature changes (for safety and maximum effectiveness) and to replenish washer fluid as necessary. I’ve also had to do a lot of cleaning on the back camera because of all the rain. (Kia ought to think about including a washer for this as well.)
The most important lesson learned from this first milestone supports my preexisting knowledge: Fast charging is typically best saved for times when you’re out and about or traveling far from home, like road trips. I’ll need to figure out at-home charging for the EV6, ideally using cheaper off-peak power, in order to make it genuinely cost-effective. The upcoming update will address this.

At launch and when it initially arrived at the CNET garage early last year, the 2026 EV6, Kia’s first completely electric car, dazzled us with its exceptional blend of performance, range, and—above all—value. I wasn’t by myself either. After winning several vehicle and SUV of the year honors, including North American Utility Vehicle of the Year, the EV6 embarked on a veritable award tour last year. I had to forgo a sunroof, bigger 20-inch wheels, color-matched body trim, and a few other features since I didn’t want the full-fat GT-Line. The 19s are now a little superior option in terms of comfort and range; the other versions are merely ornamental.
We were able to retain almost $2,000 of our hypothetical budget thanks to the less costly Wind e-AWD. The electric SUV’s sticker price was $55,105, which included a $1,500 Technology package, a $1,295 destination fee, $495 for the off-white Glacier paint, and $415 for cargo covers and floor mats.
