Since the first-generation RAV4 EV was released in 1997 and the second-generation model was produced in 2012, Toyota has been testing EVs in California and Japan, despite the fact that it may seem like a bit late to the electric vehicle party. Despite having virtually identical proportions, the electric SUV’s wheelbase is 112.2 inches longer than the RAV4’s, which is 6.3 inches longer. Because the wheels are pushed to the corners of the chassis and the roof is 2 inches shorter (65.0 inches), the BZ4X seems significantly longer than the RAV4, even though it is just 3.7 inches longer overall. Surprisingly, the BZ4X only gains a quarter of an inch in ride height over its sibling while maintaining 8.1 inches of ground clearance.
The car that satisfies those requirements is odd-looking but not ugly, with a flat-faced “hammerhead” front end with a huge panel where the grille should be, a design that blends organic curves and harsh angles, and—most controversially—massive, contrasting black fenders. The look isn’t all that different from the RAV4 or Lexus’ NX when paired with a dark color, like as the Heavy Metal silver in my example, which reduces the contrast between the fenders.
The BZ4X has approximately one inch greater headroom (38.6 inches) and legroom (42.1 inches) than the RAV4 in the first row. Driving seems weird at first, but you grow accustomed to it. I don’t usually drive this way, but I had to lower the steering wheel to see the gauges above the rim instead of through it because the SUV’s 7-inch digital instrument cluster is located high and far front on the dashboard.
However, after only a few miles, I began to appreciate and even treasure this more ergonomic position, which significantly reduced wrist ache after a long day of driving and enhanced my forward vision. Meanwhile, the BZ4X’s interior is gorgeous due to its high-quality components and understated yet sophisticated style.
Unfortunately, the BZ4X lacks the huge volume knob on the pickup and only offers basic volume adjustments. The 12.3-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia system with “Hey Toyota” hot-word recognition, which debuted in the 2019 Tundra, serves as the primary infotainment display. Overall, this menu system is well-structured and effective. However, occasionally the user interface may be so simple that it’s simple to overlook some frequently used features.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are already set up via WiFi networking and the single USB Type-A media port in the center console. The 80-kW engine on each axle of the all-wheel-drive BZ4X generates 214 horsepower and 248 lb-ft of torque. Range also drops to 222 miles for Limited grades and 228 miles for XLE grades, however sprints from 0 to 60 mph are shortened to 6.5 seconds. Surprisingly, this proposal makes use of a separate 72.8-kWh battery pack. Even while the body appeared to sag in the corners, the squat and dip during braking and launch appeared to be well-controlled.
