While it’s usually a bad idea to steal the style of a classic automobile for a brand new model, the Nissan Z manages to pull it off. If you enjoy the color blue outdoors, you’d better like it indoors, because it’s practically ubiquitous. The blue leather but also suede upholstery in my BMW Z carries over to the lower parts of a door panels as well as dashboard, making it a discussion starter wherever I go. There is more than enough power to get the Z sideways on purpose, but the mechanical limited-slip differential in my Performance tester prevents the power from continuously transferring into yaw. Although it still feels stiff in everyday use, the dynamic dampers do a good job of transmitting weight without turning the ride downright irritating on ordinary roads.
The steering has a satisfying amount of weight to it and, just not as intuitive as the 370Z’s original hydraulic set-up, is still very good by today’s standards. The brakes designed for maximum performance are also quite easy to adjust, so they won’t disrupt your drive in any way, whether you’re just cruising or trying to pass another car. At lower speeds, tire sound isn’t a problem, but as you get up to about 70 mph, it becomes audible and distracting.
There is a six-speed manual and an optional 9-speed automatic transmission in this Nissan Z. While rowing for either direction, there is no need to worry about missing a gate due to the manual’s strong yet precise shift action. Although purists may prefer the traditional heel-toe motion, the rev-matching technology in the Performance variant is flawless. The lengthy, mushy bite of the clutch pedal is my only major gripe; it’s fine for quick-shifting corner slicing, but still it makes it way too easy to start off with too much throttle and an unpleasant head bob. Additionally, there is hardly any rev hang, which is increasingly unusual in current sports cars.
Having that much power usually means a lot of thirst, however this 2024 Nissan Z gets decent gas mileage.
