I only utilized the Porsche Taycan Turbo’s InnoDrive adaptive cruise control on the level sections of I-5 between Bakersfield and the intersection with the 580 Freeway near Tracy since I didn’t alter my driving technique. My intended speed still fluctuated between 77 and 82 mph, but occasionally I would drop the hammer to get closer to a semi-truck that was traveling slowly and a left-lane that was traveling a little quicker. I just set the air conditioner to a cool 70 degrees on auto and utilized the driving mode, which was the “Normal” option by default.
How the Taycan would manage the notorious Grapevine, a section of I-5 that connects southern California with the central valley and crosses the Tehachapi Mountains at 4,100 feet, piqued my attention. Everybody who has driven this knows the drill: It can be rather steep in certain spots as it snakes into the highlands, and it may occasionally be congested with traffic, particularly large trucks pressing into the right lanes.
The initial 12-mile ascent from the town of Grapevine to the Tejon Pass on my return journey reduced the Taycan’s estimated range by 30 miles. However, the range remained constant for the following 34 miles, from the Tejon Pass back down to Magic Mountain.
Another problem this brings up is that I wish the Taycan’s regenerative braking system had more power built in. I know that a lot of people have stated this. I feel like I could have done better here, let alone the undulating hills through the Castro Valley east of San Francisco, but I’m happy the EV was able to recoup a few miles on the way back down the Grapevine. 2026 Porsche Taycan Turbo Performance

I divided the test route into four parts after spending some time getting to know the Taycan and performing errands before the trip.
Near Bakersfield, there is a fast-charging station that connects to a Walmart charger in Patterson, California, then returns to Bakersfield over the same Shell, and finally reaches downtown San Francisco.

In addition to seeing Electrify America’s expanding fast-charging infrastructure at Roadshow’s offices in San Francisco, I would be able to razz reviews editor Emme Hall about how disorganized her desk is.
I must now draw attention to a flaw in my itinerary: I was never able to go 201 kilometers between charges in the Taycan Turbo. I was forced to either reduce the range or drive well beyond what I would have been comfortable with due to the availability of fast-charging stations between LA and SF (particularly without knowing what type of mileage I was actually going to see).
I chose the interval I knew I would achieve if I had to choose between 190 and 230 miles. (As much as I love you all, even for scientific reasons, I don’t frequently flatline test automobiles on the interstate.)
I made the longest trip—189 miles—between the Bakersfield Shell and the Patterson Walmart on my route to San Francisco. The battery was only 22% charged when I put it into the Electrify America charger. After 189 miles, the additional 22% amounted to 53 miles, for a total range of 242 miles, according to estimates using reverse percentage. At the time, the Taycan’s stated remaining range was 51 miles, or an even 240 miles.
I traveled 170 miles from Patterson to San Francisco’s downtown and returned. Using the same Electrify America charger at the same Walmart, it displayed a 34% level of charge, representing a potential range of 257 miles. Coincidentally, I used an Electrify America rapid charger for the first time at a Shell gas station. All four of the chargers that were positioned on the lot’s side were turned on and operational during my visits; not one was in use. Of course, I still had to travel to the petrol stations to use the windshield squeegee.
After connecting the charging link to the Taycan, all that was needed to begin the energy flowing was a swipe of a credit card and a few taps on the touchscreen. I could charge the Taycan’s battery from 25% to 90% in 30 minutes with this 350-kilowatt connection. But in order to test the full range, I had to charge the battery to 100% each time I plugged in on this journey, which takes a lot longer. Near the upper end, charging speeds are lowered to enhance battery health.
To be clear, it is an amazing accomplishment to put that much energy into a battery this compact in less than 30 minutes. Contrary to what you would believe, it’s not a tremendous time suck. I only had to wait a few minutes—long enough to eat a packet of breakfast-on-the-go Pop-Tarts—before the Taycan was ready to roll again after I had entered the Shell station, browsed their excellent assortment of warm foodstuffs on the roller grills, read all the clever messages on the bathroom walls, looked for a “Bort” tag on the tiny license plate tower, bought a coffee and some water, and left.
My next destination was Patterson because of Electrify America’s collaboration with Walmart outlets. It went like this: swipe card, plug in, zap zap zap, boop boop boop. In this instance, however, I could maximize my time away from the car by reading a few emails, getting a nutritious lunch rather than more Pop-Tarts, and making a few more purchases. It’s surprisingly simple to pass thirty minutes.
Even though a typical petrol station is faster, if you can utilize rapid charging and schedule it to happen while you’re grocery shopping, the extra time isn’t actually lost. A $150,000 Porsche Taycan Turbo owner, however, would be hard-pressed to spend their leisure time at a Walmart.

In my $150,000 Taycan Turbo, I chose to drive the well-traveled, boring, congested I-5 freeway in California between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It’s not really creative, to be sure.
I wanted to know what type of range I would get if I didn’t alter my driving habits in any way, even though most range tests require me to adhere to specific speed limits, climate settings, or drive modes. I should have no issue going over that 201 threshold if the EPA estimate is that conservative.
Conclusion
Consider this: Since there isn’t a fast-charging network to support the Taycan, I couldn’t have completed the journey any sooner even if it had died after 201 miles. Almost every highway exit has a number of petrol stations. There are currently very few charging stations available, even in the two largest EV markets in the US, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
This type of EV travel from LA to SF would not have been feasible even a year or two ago, but groups like Electrify America are enabling it. It will be simpler to travel farther if the infrastructure is improved. Just keep in mind that for the time being, the Taycan is likely to travel significantly more than you or the EPA may have anticipated.
