2026 Lexus ES Review, Specs, Dimensions – Thanks to an exciting new technological advancement, Toyota’s premium brand claims to be just a hair ahead of Audi in the market. When the seventh iteration of the Lexus ES, which has never been seen as a particularly high-tech car, is introduced in 2026, it is expected to alter public perceptions.
When I tested the 2026 Lexus ES in July, I discovered that. The Japanese carmaker is now going one step further with optional Digital Outer Mirrors. This is a “world first” in a production car, according to the manufacturer. Regretfully, the camera-based sideview mirror technology will only be accessible in Japan, the company’s home market, at least for the time being. 2026 Lexus ES Review

Exterior & Interior
The essential component of the ES system is the pair of tiny cameras that are fixed on stanchions in place of the car’s side mirrors. Inside, at the base of the front windshield, are two 5-inch displays that display their perspective. According to Lexus, the camera housings are specifically made to prevent snow and rain from building up and obstructing the camera’s vision. Additionally, when a turn signal is triggered or the broadcast is inverted, the cameras automatically readjust their range of view.
Camera-equipped sideview mirrors have long been considered the perfect feature by automakers. They improve aerodynamics and lessen an automobile’s vulnerability to wind noise since they are often smaller and have a sleeker appearance than traditional mirror housings. Since at least the 1980s, the technology has been extensively utilized in concept vehicles that are on exhibit at auto shows; nevertheless, its commercial availability has been restricted until recently due to market-to-market regulatory constraints and expense.
It’s interesting to see that Lexus’ assertion that this is a “world first” production appears to be uncontested. In actuality, premium manufacturer Toyota is not the only one to reveal new sideview camera mirrors. I recently had the opportunity to showcase that system during a summertime prototype ride-along, after Audi’s announcement in May that the technology will be accessible in certain European regions for its upcoming electric E-Tron SUV.
Although it wasn’t officially unveiled until September 17, Audi’s crossover electric vehicle, the E-Tron, actually started manufacturing earlier this month in Brussels. Audi representatives contacted by Roadshow were unable to clarify whether the technology will be available in the first cars sold in Europe, and initial deliveries are not expected to begin until later this year. (In the United States, the 2026 model, the E-Tron, will go on sale in the second quarter of 2019.)
Lexus said in a news release about the technology that “The digital mirrors will make their debut on the new ES, which will go on sale in late October.” A Lexus representative Roadshow talked with was able to clarify that the ES will have the mirrors starting with the debut in late October, clearing up any confusion around whether early units of the new generation will be available with the optional equipment. 2026 Lexus ES Review
2026 Lexus ES Release Date & Price
Lexus will beat Audi’s E-Tron to market if they fulfill their commitment. After all these years, it’s still amazing to see the technology in production, even though the first person to bring it to market will probably be nothing more than marketing talk.
Due to current legal concerns surrounding the removal of traditional glass side mirrors and their replacement with camera-based equivalents, US customers will regrettably be excluded from the conversation completely, at least for the time being. This technology is still prohibited in the US, at least for the time being, despite attempts by Audi and other automakers to legalize it.
The 2026 Lexus ES, which comes equipped with power glass mirrors as standard, is available for just under $40,000 in the US this month. 2026 Lexus ES Review
