2027 Toyota Prius Prime Specs, Review, Models – Name a car that rapidly achieves good gas economy. For most of you, “Prius” is most likely the first name that springs to mind.
Toyota’s Prius has been the benchmark for an efficient hybrid car for over three decades. The Prius’s efficiency and aerodynamics have progressively improved with each version, and not only because it was one of the first.
The Prius Prime plug-in hybrid is the best of the best because to its elegant design, thoughtful technology, and, of course, more miles per gallon (and miles per kilowatt-hour) than you can shake a stick at. Currently in its fifth generation, the Prius is the best it has ever been.
As drivers reluctantly embrace electrification, the Prime—one of the few plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) with sufficient electric range to justify regular charging and to meet most daily driving needs without totally abandoning the gasoline safety net—becomes more and more indispensable.
Whether you’re an EV enthusiast who isn’t ready (or able) to go to all-electric or you just want to save money on gas and time at the pump, the Prius Prime is a fantastic PHEV alternative that merits your attention. 2027 Toyota Prius Prime Specs

Owners who purchase the top-tier XSE Premium model also have the option of upgrading their solar roof. For example, this $610 small solar panel can help ease the burden on the hybrid system by powering the temperature control during a remote start, enabling you to return to a cool car without compromising the range of the EV mode.
It can even increase the EV range by a few miles (say five or six miles) if exposed to sunlight for more than twelve hours a day, but if you drive your Prime frequently, don’t expect many free solar-powered miles.
My Spartan SE model does not have this choice, which has the largest selection of any model. Therefore, I don’t think the Solar Roof is required, even if it is very great. Even while many vehicles in its class have digital instrument clusters, the Prius’ 7-inch driver display is positioned higher on the dashboard and more front than those of other vehicles. The driver may hold the steering wheel lower in their grip without blocking the speedometer because of its placement and the lack of an overhanging cowl.
In my experience, this results in more natural arm bend and rotation, reduced shoulder pain on longer excursions, and improved control while turning. The trip computer shows estimates for electric car (mi/kWh) and hybrid (mpg) efficiency, but I couldn’t find a combined number for both. That’s my only grievance. Ultimately, I used a calculator and a fill-up to do my calculations the old-fashioned way, which is just a little inconvenient.
An 8-inch central touchscreen (or an optional 12.3-inch one) serves as the main interface for media choices, navigation, and vehicle settings. During my testing, I generally utilized the basic wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto connectivity, even though Toyota’s built-in maps and navigation software work rather well.
Unfortunately, but increasingly usual for new cars, the onboard infotainment features—such as internet search, digital key via the Toyota app, smart home connection, music streaming, and more—require a $15 to $25 monthly subscription to continue working beyond the first year. You might be surprised to learn how important standard smartphone mirroring is.
The basic 6-speaker audio system that came with my SE model wasn’t to my taste. The soundstage was pushed to the far corners of the dashboard rather than the center by the A-pillar tweeters, which overshadowed the primary speakers, but the clarity and sound quality were sufficient.
My passengers didn’t seem to mind, but if you’re the kind of person who, like me, has a particular taste in music, you might want to check out the top-spec XSE Premium’s 8-speaker JBL Premium audio system before buying. 2027 Toyota Prius Prime Specs

Engine & Performance
Under the hood of the Prius Prime, two asymmetrical electric motors and a 2.0-liter gasoline four-cylinder engine split motivating duties. When in hybrid mode, this is one of the most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered cars on the market today, with the lightest SE trim level reaching up to 52 miles per gallon.
That’s before you consider the larger 13.6-kWh lithium-ion battery and SAE J1772 charging port of the PHEV, of course. When plugged in, the Prime can go up to 45 miles on grid power before the gasoline engine starts up. (The heavier, more feature-rich XSE and XSE Premium models lose the class-leading 40-mile electric range and 48 hybrid mpg.)
The Prius Prime’s EV mode even reaches 3.9 miles per kWh on the EPA test cycle, which is comparable to many EVs’ efficiency. If drivers routinely recharge their batteries overnight (11 hours at a 120-volt outlet or only four hours on a 240-volt Level 2 socket), they may be able to spend weeks without using any gasoline at all.
I barely did, averaging approximately 86 combined mpge for the week, charging every other night on a regular 15-amp socket, and using EV mode for roughly 64% of my 210 tested miles. If I plugged in more frequently, my average efficiency would increase. However, if I don’t plug in, I could get closer to 50 mpg.
A continuously variable transmission that combines and cross-fades the two power sources allows the Prime to provide up to 220 horsepower to the front wheels. For a vehicle in this medium class, it isn’t a very astounding amount of power, but the Prius doesn’t appear to be underpowered either; its ample electric torque makes acceleration pleasant and seamless. I never felt like I lacked “oomph” when it came time to pass or merge during my testing week.
Because of the hybrid’s unique ergonomics and steering wheel placement, I was very pleased with the Prius’ steering feel in terms of performance. It was swift and predictable, yet it seemed light to the touch.
2027 Toyota Prius Prime Safety Features
All 2027 Prius Prime variants are equipped with Toyota’s Lane Tracing steering assistance, full-speed adaptive cruise control, and the company’s Safety Sense 3.0 safety technology package. The base package also includes blind spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition to further enhance highway safety.
Normal front and rear cross-traffic sirens can assist prevent collisions with automobiles coming from the side when pulling out of a driveway or crossing a junction at urban speeds. The optional Parking Brake Assist may even automatically apply the brakes at parking lot speeds if you go too close to an object, a person, or a pet. At only $35, this option is quite affordable, so I wonder why it’s not a standard feature.
That is an excellent baseline safety package, and if you upgrade to the highest XSE Premium specification, you can add a bird’s-eye surround camera system and Toyota’s hands-free Advanced Park technology. Toyota does not offer hands-free highway assistance like Super Cruise or BlueCruise, but it isn’t a deal breaker in this price range.
2027 Toyota Prius Prime Release Date & Price
To be honest, the 2027 Toyota Prius Prime is the uncommon example where the entry-point is probably the sweet spot, coming in at $34,070 (with the $1,095 destination cost). Along with more than enough safety and driver aid technologies, you get the best EV range and fuel efficiency in the lineup.
Our model, when tested, cost $34,434—a fair price for any car in its class and, moreover, one of the cheapest cars on the market right now. Wheel locking, floor mats, and the odd $35 Brake Assist upgrade were also offered.
The XSE comes with automatic headlights, heated power seats, better wheels, and a few more creature comforts for $37,320. The top-of-the-line XSE Premium, which retails for $40,765, has an upgraded audio system, a larger touchscreen, and a dual-panel sunroof.
If your budget permits, you may be tempted to upgrade to the XSE Premium’s Advanced Safety features and Solar Roof option, which are both quite nice and will raise the total cost to $43,010, but for most purchasers in this class, I would suggest taking a more minimalist approach to trim levels and extras. 2027 Toyota Prius Prime Specs
