We were curious as to whether the term “value” still applies to EVs in the real world, because it isn’t typically used to describe them. The asking price of $38,115 is fair for an electric car. For the same reason, this one is also receiving an additional year.

Driving the Leaf like any other car, I was hell-bent on hypermiling the whole time. We shouldn’t expect electric vehicle owners to wrap up with chemical hand warmers and go at 15 mph below the speed limit on cold days if we’re serious about EVs.
Driving up to the New York State Thruway, I adjusted the seat and wheel warmers, turned the HVAC to my regular 72 degrees, cranked up the cruise control to my usual pace, listened to the latest John Prine song through Android Auto, and so on. After just twenty miles, I had spent the fifty miles of range that was claimed, so I switched off the heat and lowered the cruise control a few notches.
There was a five-mile range when the AC was switched off. With a couple more on board, I relaxed. I was able to get by with just the heated seat and wheel activated every twenty minutes.
I arrived to the Woodbury Common quick charger with a battery life of less than 50%. I chose my lunch place in advance so I could chow down at one of the several eateries in the area as the Leaf chewed on DC.
After a fifteen-minute walk through posh fake sales and industrial catastrophes, I finally arrived to the finest Chipotle burrito I’ve ever eaten. In actuality, the eateries are located on the opposite side of the structure.
The Leaf had used 17.464 kWh and I had reached 95 percent by the 45-minute mark. The typical DC fast-charge method involves rapidly charging the battery pack to 80% capacity and then gradually decreasing the current. The remaining distance was 98 miles, and the mileage read 143 miles, so I figured I had a good amount of juice. As I got back on the Thruway, the warmth kicked back on again.
I wouldn’t have been as anxious on the way home if I’d had the second charger. I use this anecdote to highlight the compromises that early adopters of electric vehicles will have to make, even if it’s obvious that driving an electric automobile has its benefits.
When I’m not trying to get the most juice out of its battery, the Leaf is a joy to travel with thanks to its spacious trunk, easy handling, and overall pleasantness. Why? Because cold reduces the effectiveness of a lithium-ion battery pack, firstly, an automobile’s maximum range is diminished. The Leaf’s active temperature management might work well in this scenario. Even if it did, the 35 °F heat would still restrict your choices.
Maintaining the driver’s thermal comfort is of paramount importance, even beyond the pack’s efficacy. Due to the substantial quantity of waste heat produced by a typical internal combustion engine, a very modest number of fans is enough to warm the cabin. I paused at the Malden Travel Plaza, where you can find one of the Empire State’s quick-charge stations. Near the diesel fill-up area, you’ll find the solitary charger. I stepped out of the vehicle as the snow started to fall, hooked up the clumsy ChaDeMo connector to the nose, and wrestled with my phone to make sure it was charging.
Due to an error, fast-charging was abruptly stopped a few seconds later. After taking the car apart, reassembling it, and getting covered in ice snow, it still wouldn’t start, so I had to start from the beginning. The charging procedure abruptly ended once more.

Now I slowed down and switched off the heater after going what seemed like ten miles. As soon as it started snowing, the temperature plummeted, leaving my once-comfortable range cushion in the dust. In an instant, that sharpness was gone. I was able to keep my fear at bay because I could see another fast-charger approaching. I got myself ready for a second, perhaps shorter, break so I could finish the pack.
The radar sensor and the front of the vehicle started to freeze as the snow leveled out and got closer to storm level. After ProPilot Assist beeped and showed a discouraging message on the dashboard, I was unable to regain control of the cruise control for the remainder of the journey.
It has just occurred to me that adaptive cruise control is useless here because the vehicle has no means of knowing how far ahead other vehicles are. It irritates me, though, because switching to conventional cruise control—which does not require those sensors—does not work.
